Have you ever thought of chucking everything and starting life over in a new country? This is the true story of Ilene Springer who tells you what it's like to leave the US at the age of 55 to start a new life in another country, while reluctantly leaving two grown daughters behind who claim she is abandoning them. It tells all the good, bad and funny about being an expatriate--and there's a lot of all three. A divorced freelance writer who suffers from panic attacks, Ilene becomes desperate when her American health insurance bill skyrockets to over $900 a month. When it becomes a choice between paying the rent or going to the doctor, Ilene chooses a third, terrifying option moving to the Mediterranean island of Malta where she can possibly train to become an English teacher and get into the country’s national healthcare system. Armed with only her wits, a cat and her British-German boyfriend who she has recently met on the Web, Ilene makes the move, ironically on the eve of the election of Barack Obama. But despite being a so-called English-speaking country, Malta is not easy to get used to, Americans are not welcomed as employees and her partner is much harder to live with than she thought. And yet the gorgeous Maltese sun, sea and fascinating foreigners lead Ilene to a zany adventure of a lifetime. Based on the popular blog An American in Malta, Ilene’s confessions warn anyone who ever thought of starting over somewhere new the raw, hard truth and often the hilarious things that await them.

The Diary of an American Expatriate eBook Ilene Springer

Literally, this is a diary; an unedited transcript of a woman's day to day recollections of her first year as an expat in Malta. Petty with some moments of humor, the pace is set in short sentences and phrases. The many spelling and grammar errors (and from an author who claims to be an English teacher) are irritating. I picked up this story because I plan a visit to Malta but I am discounting the insight gathered in this book. A waste of time and money. (Wonder at the source of the rave reviews)

The Diary of an American Expatriate eBook Ilene Springer Reviews

I brought this book with me over a long weekend trip, with the plan of picking it up once or twice during some downtime. Well wouldn't you know, before I knew it I had finished the whole book by the first afternoon of our trip!

Springer's writing is unabashedly honest, making you feel as though you're experiencing her exciting journey and often hilarious escapades right along with her. She tells her tale with a delightfully self-deprecating wit, but at the same time is very candid about the painstaking decisions and conflicted emotions that accompany her life-changing adventure.

By the end of this read, you get a very real sense of what it might be like to move far away from everyone and everything you've ever known, and move to a beautiful, but wildly different country, culture, and people.

This book is great for the traveller, the adventurer, anyone considering a big move or life change, or for those who simply want to fantasize about what it would be like to take that huge leap into the unknown.
I'm Maltese, and I've been living in Malta all my life. I'd like to consider us a warm, welcoming people, and we're certainly used to having foreigners settling down on the island.

I've always wondered why.

Perhaps it's because of the sunny weather or the local hospitality. Perhaps it's because of the island's rich cultural and historical heritage. Or perhaps it's because of more personal, practical or financial reasons.

So you may imagine my curiosity when I came across Ilene Springer's e-book on the store, displaying the Maltese Cross and a Maltese scene on the cover. Hey, what's this?

Well, it's turned out to be quite a surprising, amusing and eye-opening experience. The book is mainly an autobiography - the title says it all, after all. However it's not just a personal journey but also a travel guide of sorts.

It's fun, it's light-hearted, it's fresh. And it's fascinating especially because it's very curious to see things that are so commonplace to a Maltese from the point of view of an outsider. Small details in our lifestyle we Maltese take for granted are presented to us from another angle, another point of view. And suddenly they are a completely new discovery.
In short, it's a very enjoyable read.

Any of you out there considering coming over to settle on these sun-drenched islands would find this work quite informative too.
All I can say is "WOW". The writing style is fun to read and the adventure is exciting. I look forward to hearing more about Ilene Springer's experiences.....
Ms. Springer,

Please write a sequel SOON!

I want to know what happened next and did you remain in Malta?
Loved it, very informative!
Many Americans dream of an island paradise they can escape to for a week or maybe even a month.

Ilene Springer found herself an island "reality" instead....one which has become her new home.

The creator of the popular blog An-American-in-Malta.com has written a charming and informative book, "The Diary of an
American Expatriate" (published by Andrews UK Limited), which is based on her blog entries.

She explains how, out of mainly financial necessity (divorced for some years and finding her insurance rate going up to $900.00 a month at age 55), she made the difficult decision to leave her home in New Hampshire to settle permanently on the Island of Malta with her current boyfriend, whom she refers to as "Mr. S." Both had fallen love with Malta years previously, so this was a logical next step.

It is said "getting there is half the fun", but the journey is fraught with mind-numbing bank procedures, making stressful arrangements with the movers, a conflict with her landlord and, most importantly, making sure her beloved cat Egypt has passed all medical and documentation hurdles....more than Ms. Springer seems to have had herself.

Add to this the emotional turmoil of leaving her two grown daughters and other family behind....

The "meat" of the book details the often frustrating process for obtaining the proper certification for teaching English to European students in Maltese schools, and here we get to meet some of the most demanding, difficult and yet inspiring people in Springer's new professional life.

Ms. Springer's funny, conversational style really puts the reader right alongside her every step of the way, and if she has a habit of repeating certain cute puns or phrases, they still will make you laugh each time.

In its simple, direct way, "The Diary of an American Expatriate" shows us the reality behind such a life-changing decision.

I cozied up in bed last night to read this wonderful diary, and when I finished I wanted more of Ms. Springer's brave, insightful and often hilarious adventures in moving to and living in Malta. How many of us haven't dreamed of packing it all in and starting a new life on a beautiful island? Sounds easy but the journey this talented writer goes on is often difficult but always purposeful, settling in a foreign land and finally being with her partner, not to mention trying to make a living. As you will see the transition is not easy, especially the author's difficult decision to live away from her beloved daughters in America.

You won't want to miss the journey through Ms. Springer's diary to learn about the island's customs, quirks and people, and how this American expatriate has become a part of Malta.
